Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to survive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. The route she took was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed to do was abyssal. In New York, she was employed at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working as an usherette during the day while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Her studies in drama led her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
